Dr Muhammad Hijazy

— PhD (Organisational Psychology), MSc (HRM), BSc (Economics), PgCHE, SFHEA

A PhD holder with wide knowledge in Economics and Social Psychology, Mathematics and Statistics, and Computational Modelling. Strong numerical and analytical problem-solving skills; gained through academic and professional experiences. Wide range of research-based skills acquired during (i) Management and Social Psychology research on primary and secondary data collected from service and industrial sectors, (ii) Criminal Justice and Cyber Security research, and (iii) Pedagogic research on the UK Higher Education sector.

Familiar with different research methods (qualitative and quantitative) of collecting and analysing data. Proven experience of (i) designing and distributing questionnaires both by hand and electronically via online platforms such as Qualtrics; (ii) conducting various descriptive and inferential statistics (by using both Frequentist and Bayesian approaches) on cross sectional and longitudinal quantitative data; by using R, Python, SPSS, and MS Excel; (iii) using Agent-based Modelling and Machine Learning to understand complex socio-economic, psychological, and organisational phenomena; and (iv) using Natural Language Processing to analyse textual data. Experience of conducting interviews (in Arabic and English), and using NVivo software to analyse and organise large qualitative data sets such as interview transcripts and textual documents.

A PGCertHE holder and a senior fellow of the HEA. Teaching (both online and in-classroom) and module-leading experience, and research supervision experience in Business and Management programmes. Ability to use innovative teaching and learning technology and equipment. Good knowledge of contemporary issues in the UK Higher Education.

Wide knowledge of the different Islamic and Arabic cultures. Ability to smoothly establish and develop rapport with Arab and Muslim individuals and groups.

Interested in Complexity and the using of Agent-based Modelling to understand economic, social, and organisational phenomena.

  • Experience of analysing and organising large qualitative data sets such as interview transcripts and textual documents.
  • Experience of designing and distributing questionnaires (both hardcopy by hand and electronically via online platforms such as Qualtrics), and conducting various descriptive and inferential statistical tests (by using both Frequentist and Bayesian approaches) on primary and secondary quantitative data.
  • Experience of recruiting people to participate in research studying very sensitive topics (e.g. equity and policing).
  • Conducted 98 unstructured and semi-structured interviews (in English and Arabic) with people from different ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds (I have interviewed 40 participants in my PhD research, 5 participants in a pedagogic study at the University of Hertfordshire and 53 participants in a Criminal Justice study at the University of Cambridge).
  • Experience of addressing various ethical issues during and after the fieldwork study.
  • Knowledge and experience of designing, running, and analysing psychological experiments with human participants.

Teaching & Leadership Experience & Skills


  • Experience of leading a large MBA programme with around 1,000 students across different cohorts; this includes running induction and weekly support sessions to help students settle into university life, organising social events and tours for the students and staff, and responding to the students’ enquires.
  • Involved in the development and validation/approval process for new teaching programmes in UK HE.
  • Experience of leading a number of modules (UK Level5 to Level7) across different cohorts/campuses; for which I have prepared teaching materials (e.g. module handbooks/specification documents, lecture slides, case studies, reading lists, assignment briefs, marking rubrics and teaching videos), and completed assessment moderation processes and annual module reports.
  • Experience of conducting in-classroom teaching, and using various online collaborative tools (e.g. Blackboard Collaborate, GoToWebinar and MS Teams) to deliver online teaching sessions (for UK Level3 to Level7).
  • Experience of closely working with local businesses and inviting guest speakers, to classes, to exchange knowledge and experience with students.
  • Involved in a pedagogic research project looking at the embedding of graduate attributes into the curriculum of a UK Higher Education institution.

Computer & Technology Skills


  • Extensive experience of data munging and conducting quantitative analysis by using R, Python, SPSS, and MS Excel; gained through two postdoctoral research at the University of Bath, a pedagogic research at the University of Hertfordshire, my PhD and MSc research, teaching statistics and SPSS, and supervising BA and MSc dissertations.
  • Knowledge of using NetLogo to build simulation models for complex social phenomena, gained through studying massive open online courses and participating in a challenge organised by the Santa Fe Institute.
  • Experience of using E-prime and E-basic to design and run computer-based psychological experiments with human participants; gained through my work at the Department of Psychology, the University of Bath.
  • Extensive experience of using NVivo software package to analyse and organise large qualitative data sets; gained through my PhD research, pedagogic research, and supervising MSc dissertations.
  • Experience of using MS PowerPoint and image-editing software to prepare teaching materials. Experience of using screen-recording software to record educational videos, and using Shotcut to edit those videos.
  • Experience of developing and disseminating learning activities by using a range of software that include –but not limited to– MS Forms, Blackboard, H5P and Padlet.
  • Experience of using various online collaborative tools (e.g. Blackboard Collaborate, GoToWebinar and MS Teams) to deliver online teaching sessions.
  • Extensive experience of implementing VBA programming language to improve the capabilities of MS Excel; gained through postdoctoral research at the University of Bath, as well as, through working as a moderator between 2004-2006 in an online forum (www.officena.net) specialised in providing technical help to MS Office users.

Competitions & Awards


  • Jun 2018 — Completed the Spring 2018 Complexity Challenge organised by the Santa Fe Institute with distinction. The challenge required analysing a financial investment problem. My solution of the problem was chosen to be among the three top ones.
